Coconut Nectar: The Low Glycemic Sweetener

At Bravo Bars, we strive for better ingredients that offer more health benefits. So when it came to decide our sweetener, generic processed sugar was just not an option. Coconut sugar has the delicious sweet taste without the unnecessary additives, artificial flavors or sweeteners that the overly processed, nutrient bankrupt sugars have on our shelves today.

The glycemic index (GI) is the measurement of blood sugar levels in conjunction with a consumed food item and how stable or unstable it will keep your blood sugar. It is a sliding scale of zero to 100, 100 being the score that would most negatively affect blood sugar.

If you have read our recent posts, you know how critical stable blood sugar is to a healthy and happy lifestyle. For example, white cane sugar has a GI score of 58-65 where high-fructose corn syrup has a GI score of 87. Coconut Nectar has a GI score of 35.

Now a lower GI score is not the only benefit to this delicious tropical sweetener.

Coconut nectar is naturally sweet right out of the tree, there is no need to process or filter it, so it comes in the form nature had intended, unlike HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) or processed white sugar. This means you get all the raw living enzymes the coconut palm inherently provides as well as all the nutrient content. These enzymes help to digest the sugars in a time-released manner, which contributes to its attributes as a low glycemic sugar substitute.

The sap and nectar are considerably high in amino acids, minerals, many vitamins and trace elements.

There are a total of 17 amino acids found in raw coconut nectar.  Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are important to many bodily functions including the transport and storage of nutrients.  They make up our cells, tissues and muscles and are essential for muscle growth and tissue repair.

There are nine essential amino acids that the body does not naturally make and we must get them through the foods we eat.  Coconut sap contains all nine of these amino’s plus eight more non-essentials.
